Audra McDonald – who won the first of her (so far) four Tony Awards for her role in the ’94 Broadway revival of CAROUSEL – will be singing that score’s timeless anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” at AIDS Walk New York this Sunday morning, May 15.
New York City has hosted annual AIDS Walks since 1987. A special tradition was born in 1991, when R&H offered “You’ll Never Walk Alone” to the AIDS Walk campaign. Every year since – and in countless AIDS Walks all across America – our song is heard: as the opening ceremony concludes, and the marchers begin to move, a celebrity rings out with this inspirational R&H standard. Broadway stars (Betty Buckley, Patti LuPone, and Shirley Verrett, McDonald’s co-star in CAROUSEL), and vocalists from across the musical spectrum (Melissa Manchester, Deborah Gibson, Joan Baez, Marilyn Horne) have all done the honors.
Participants in this year’s 26th annual AIDS Walk New York will hear McDonald – along with cast members from Broadway’s PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, TV’s MODERN FAMILY and more – at the 9AM opening ceremonies in Sheeps Meadow in Central Park.
