Spialek, Hans

Hans Spialek was one of the most prolific orchestrators in the 1930s and 1940s, orchestrating twelve Rodgers & Hart musicals and nine Cole Porter shows, assisting (often uncredited) on many other shows into the 1950s. He composed the symphonic suite, THE TALL CITY, for the opening of Radio City Music Hall in 1932 and began his long musical career as a choir boy at the Vienna State Opera under the direction of Gustav Mahler. In 1983 he received a Drama Desk Award for ON YOUR TOES. Among currently available recordings that demonstrate the Spialek sound are City Center Encores! cast albums for PAL JOEY (1995) and THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE (1997).
