Reefer Madness
Reefer Madness
Book by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney | Music by Dan Studney | Lyrics by Kevin Murphy
Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. You won't be able to resist the spoofy fun of REEFER MADNESS. The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes like 'Down at the Ol' Five and Dime' and the Vegas-style 'Listen to Jesus, Jimmy,' featuring J.C. Himself leading a chorus of showgirl angels. This dynamic show will go straight to your head! REEFER MADNESS is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary. It contains adult humor, religious parody, and drug use, as well as suggested violence and sexual explicitness. It therefore may be inappropriate for younger performers and audiences.

  • Quotes
"REEFER MADNESS: THE MUSICAL broadly expands on the skeleton plot of the original film and turns it into a deliciously campy, wickedly funny romp… This show combines the main character from Godspell with the kinkiness of The Rocky Horror Show and the traditional musical theatre aesthetic of A Chorus Line…" — Johnnie Walker, Strand (Toronto)
"A delirious romp, which at its best reaches highs of intoxicating goofiness." — Elysa Gardner, USA Today
"REEFER MADNESS...is deliberately outlandish and silly. And that's what makes it so good...[the show includes] a dozen or so over-the-top and hilarious production numbers." — Robert Dominguez, New York Daily News
"The funniest thing to come down the pike -- or the pipe -- in a while." — Eric Marchese, Backstage
"The musical stage version of REEFER MADNESS! really deserves to be a phenomenon unto itself.  You don't even have to inhale to enjoy it." — Meg Donivan, After Dark

Writers Notes for Reefer Madness

Andy Fickman
Written By: Dan Studney

Dan Studney (Music, Book): I'm not trying to lampoon the United States government. I'm trying to lampoon everyone and everything. This show is an equal opportunity offender.

Andy Fickman (Original Director): REEFER MADNESS just happened to be a great story—ultimately Kevin and Dan found a great way into it and made it funny and universal. Studney: It's not a show that's anti-Jesus, it's not a show that's anti-flag, it's not a show that's racist, it's not a show that's ageist, and it's not a show that's homophobic. But all those things are laid out. Ultimately, the truth is we're against people that use the flag or Jesus or fears of homophobia or racism to force you to do something. When Columbine happened, I walked into rehearsal and said, 'This is what this is about’. It's about a little man standing behind a podium, with a CNN camera on him and taking the chance to jump into the spotlight and push through an agenda. With Columbine, it was, 'The children are dying! So we have to ban video games! The NRA is to blame! The children are dying! Violent Hollywood movies are to blame! Violent song lyrics are to blame!'

[On continuing work on the show directly after September 11th, 2001:]

Studney: It's obviously affected the show. We're doing something that we didn't set out to do, which is important, which is to provide a respite from fear. By laughing at it, you disarm it. You become better than it.

Kevin Murphy (Lyrics, Book): In terms of the tragedy, what is wonderful and unique about this country is the fact that you can poke fun at the institutions, at the ivory towers, and you don't get thrown into prison and you don't get shot and you don't get ostracized from society.
