The Melody Lingers On
Dialogue taken from the book | By Mary Ellin Barrett | Script Continuity by Tom Briggs | Orchestrations and Vocal Arrangements by Donald Johnston | Conceived By Karin Baker
'It is all history now - ancient history. The celebrated romance of the Catholic golden girl, born to millions, and the immigrant cantor's son from the Lower East Side.' So writes Mary Ellin Barrett in her biography Irving Berlin: A Daughter's Memoir, on which this biographical revue is based. In a life that spanned more than 100 years, and with a creative output of over 1,000 songs, Irving Berlin epitomized Jerome Kern's famous adage that 'Irving Berlin has no place in American music. He is American music.' Over a period of five decades, Berlin's outpouring of ballads, dance numbers, novelty tunes and love songs defined American popular music. This revue was developed at the distinguished Trinity School in New York City and introduced hundreds of high school kids to the work of a man whose name was only familiar to some as the composer of 'God Bless America.' As this new generation learned the story of the Russian Immigrant who started as a singing waiter at a saloon on the Bowery, they became increasingly exhilarated with the discovery of each new song. They also found in Berlin's marriage a compelling, contemporary love story. From Tin Pan Alley to Broadway, from Hollywood to tours of duty throughout Europe and the Pacific, the story of Irving Berlin is the story of this American century.

I had a, well, magical experience on Saturday night.  Andy Einhorn, the indefatigable conductor and musical director of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA, invited me to sit in the orchestra pit of the Broadway Theatre during the performance.  Because the pit is big enough, there is a space where, once the orchestra members are settled in their seats, a chair can be placed safely, between the bows of the violins and the constant instrument shifting of the woodwind section. With the 9 Tony Award nominations for Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA announced this morning, once again Rodgers and Hammerstein stand tall and proud among the best of Broadway.

As I am now based in London, where Rodgers & Hammerstein is launching our own European theatrical licensing division – R&H Theatricals Europe – I had the great pleasure of hopping down to Madrid for 24 hours in late December, to see SONRISAS…, meet the cast and equally hardworking crew, and revel in a production of the timeless musical that seems to “bloom and grow forever” – and everywhere.

Writers Notes for The Melody Lingers On

The cast should be comprised of a youthful, American melting pot of races and nationalities.  While the show is written for a minimum cast of ten, it can be easily expanded to incorporate a singing-dancing chorus as large as desired.  Mark and Juliet consistently step into the roles of Irving Berlin and his wife, Ellin Mackay, throughout the show, while the others are called upon to play a variety of characters.  The cast also serves as a sort of Greek chorus, speaking directly to the audience and sometimes relating their tales in the style of “Story theatre.”

PLEASE NOTE: there are opportunities in the show for actors to play onstage instruments. The music for these instrumental sections is at the back of this book following the vocal arrangements.

This revue was originally developed at a high school as a way of introducing students to the work of a man whose name was only familiar to some as the composer of “God Bless America.”  It was inspiring to see a new generation become increasingly exhilarated, swept up in the discovery of each new song.  Berlin has not traditionally been praised with adjectives like “cool” and “awesome,” but that’s exactly how the kids felt about Berlin’s incomparable musical legacy.  Throughout the production period they were genuinely moved by his words and music, to both laughter and tears, ultimately understanding that the songs of Irving Berlin tell the story of this American century.  They were also enthralled by Mary Ellin Barrett’s extraordinary book about her father, Irving Berlin: A Daughter’s Memoir, on which this revue is based (available from Limelight Editions).
