Arena Stage's acclaimed and record-breaking production of OKLAHOMA! took home top prizes at the Helen Hayes Awards in Washington DC on Monday night. The Hayes Awards -- which honors excellence in the theater community of the nation's capital -- tied OKLAHOMA!! with CANDIDE for Best Resident Musical. The two musicals also tied in the Best Actor, Resident Musical, category, with OKLAHOMA!'s Curly, Nicholas Rodriguez, sharing the prize. OKLAHOMA! also took home top prizes for choreography (Parker Esse) and Musical Direction (George Fulginiti-Shakar).
A shout-out also to Ed Dixon, winner of the Best Supporting Actor, Resident Musical, trophy, for his role in Signature Theater's production of R&H Theatricals’ title, SUNSET BOULEVARD.
Arena Stage's production of OKLAHOMA!, directed by Molly Smith, opened in early December of last year to rave reviews, and sold-out crowds. Breaking its own box office record several times, the production extended into early 2011. The (now) Helen Hayes Award winning production returns to Arena Stage this summer, running from July 8 to October 2.
