Frances Goodrich (1891-1984) was born in Belleville, NJ and started in the theatre as an actress, making her debut with Ruth Chatterton in 1916 in COME OUT OF THE KITCHEN. After collaborating with Albert Hackett in writing the play UP POPS THE DEVIL in 1930, they married the following year. The team continued to write the plays BRIDAL WISE, THE GREAT BIG DOORSTEP and THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK for which they received a Tony Award, NY Drama Critics Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK was used as the basis for the musical YOURS, ANNE.
The team also wrote the screenplays for the first three films of The Thin Man series, as well as Naughty Marietta, Ah, Wilderness, Rose Marie, It's A Wonderful Life (the inspiration for the musical A WONDERFUL LIFE), Easter Parade, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Pirate, In the Good Old Summertime, Father of the Bride, Father's Little Dividend and The Diary of Anne Frank.
