Mr. Silverman has won Obie, Drama Desk, Naumberg and Koussevitsky Foundation Awards. He was twice commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. His music has been performed by Pierre Boulez with the New York Philharmonic.
He has composed extensively for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival of Canada (1967-1994), the Mark Taper Forum of Los Angeles (1980) and the New York Shakespeare Festival (1980, 1994). His collaborations with Richard Foreman include ELEPHANT STEPS (1968), MADAME ADARE (1981), HOTEL FOR CRIMINALS (1984), THE AMERICAN IMAGINATION (1978), THE GOLEM (1984), DR. SELAVY'S MAGIC THEATRE (1972 and 1984), AFRICANUS INSTRUCTUS (1986) and LOVE AND SCIENCE (1990). He has written a musical, UP FROM PARADISE (1980) with Arthur Miller.
Mr. Silverman's film scores include Nanook of the North (1975), Simon (1979), Eyewitness (1981) and I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can (1982).
His music has been recorded by CBS, United Artists, RCA Victor, Varese Sarabande, Vanguard Omega, Attic, and Folkways Records. His Broadway credits include the music for BENT (1979), OTHELLO (1982), THE LITTLE FOXES (1982), PRIVATE LIVES (1983), ST. JOAN (1993), TIMON OF ATHENS (1993), THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR (1994) and UNCLE VANYA (1995). The award-winning MTG production of the Thomson/Stein THE MOTHER OF US ALL (1983) marked Mr. Silverman's directorial debut. He composed a music theatre piece, A GOOD LIFE for the Kennedy Center's "Imagination Celebration" (1986) and he conceived, adapted the music and directed BLACK SEA FOLLIES which opened Off-Broadway in December 1986. Mr. Silverman was nominated for a Grammy for his conducting of THE THREEPENNY OPERA.
THE BLUEBIRD OF UNHAPPINESS, a Woody Allen revue for which he wrote the music, played at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester during June-August 1987. In the fall of 1987, he composed the incidental and song music for the Seattle Repertory Theatre's production of CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE.
AFRICANUS INSTRUCTUS was invited to the Autumn Festivals of Madrid, Paris and Lille in 1986.
He composed the score for a PBS program, Behind the Scenes with David Hockney, as well as a piece for the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson trio, co-commissioned by the 92nd Street YM-YWHA and the Krannert Center of the University of Illinois, Urbana.
For the Stratford Shakespearean Festival of Canada, Mr. Silverman composed the scores for THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (1989), TIMON OF ATHENS (1991), MEASURE FOR MEASURE (1992) and THE MOLIERE COMEDIES, all directed by Michael Langham, as well as the 1994 production of TWELFTH NIGHT, directed by Richard Monette.

Silverman has also created a CD of songs set to Shakespeare text performed by James Taylor, "Sweet Airs That Give Delight," Attic Records (Canada, 1993); conceived and adapted Brasileirinho CD featuring flutist Paula Robison, Omega Records (1993); arranged James Taylor's appearance on Evening at the Pops (PBS, 1993), and the Rainforest Benefit (1994, 1997); LOVE AND SCIENCE (opera) produced by Houston Grand Opera (1993); CD of trio In Celebration recorded by Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, Legacies, Arabesque Records (1996); arranged James Taylor's Symphony Orchestra tour (1995 and 1996); arranged James Taylor's appearances at President Clinton's Inaugural Gala and VH-1 Honors (1997); featured arrangements on James Taylor's CD, Hourglass (1997 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album); arranger, and orchestrator on Paul Simon's musical THE CAPEMAN (1997-1998 Tony Award Nomination for Best Orchestration); and composed score for Lincoln Center Theatre's 1998 Tony-nominated (Best Revival) production of AH, WILDERNESS!
